It is with much sadness that we note the passing on August 8, 2001, of ART REA, Chairman of the Ontario Road Riders Association for a number of years in the 1990's. He was the second Chair of ORRA, following Gerry German, one of the founders of the Association. Gerry was a hard act to follow and Art lived up to his reputation as a organizing chairperson, having been the sparkplug for the formation of the Canadian chapters of the Venture Touring Association and also charity and touring motorcycle events such as the Ride for Sight. Art was involved with ORRA during much of the long struggle for fair insurance rates for Ontario’s motorcyclists, using his own situation as a vehicle to obtain telling publicity during that protracted struggle. He left the executive of ORRA when work and family commitments caused him to relocate outside the Toronto area.
The United Church in Pontypool saw a standing room-only gathering of Art’s friends and relations on August 11th. Many of those present were from Art’s motorcycling life and the eulogies contained numerous references to the importance of his contribution to the Ontario motorcycling scene through his organizational efforts.
Art died at the early age of 56 after a painful struggle with cancer. The family indicated that memorial donations to the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto would be greatly appreciated.
