Charles "Chuck" Chavas died peacefully at the hospital, surrounded by his family on September 13, 2015 in Portage, IN at the age of 62. Chuck is survived by his wife, Irene; their children: Robert (Patsy) Chavas of Wanatah, IN and Melissa (Steve) Peters of Green Bay, WI; one grandson, Dakota Chavas; sister, Roberta (Larry) Martin of Pinellas Park, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marion Chavas.

Chuck was born in 1953. He was a life-long resident of Portage. He graduated from Portage High School in 1971. He married the love of his life, Irene, in 1974. Chuck worked at and retired from US Steel Gary Works where he worked as a mobile equipment mechanic in the locomotive shop. Chuck enjoyed interacting and talking with others. He never met someone who was a stranger and once somebody met him, they never forgot him.

Chuck was an active member of the South Haven Jaycees and the Indiana State Jaycees for many years. Chuck also enjoyed riding on his motorcycle and throughout his life traveled in each of the lower 48 states. He was a member of the Hoosier Pleasure Riders, Indiana Voyagers Association, and the Motorcycle Touring Association (formerly Venture Touring Society).

Per Chuck's wishes there will not be a funeral; however, the family is planning a Celebration of Life and will be updating family and friends of the arrangements. Arrangements handled by Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 6941 Central Ave., Portage, IN 46368. Cremation services provided by Heritage Crematory.
