NEW CASTLE - Gary E. Smith, age 63, lifelong resident of Henry County, passed away Saturday evening, April 18, 2009 at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, IN.
He was born August 8, 1945 in New Castle, IN, a son of the late Nelson and Louise Catt Smith. He was a New Castle resident most of his life, and a 1963 graduate of New Castle Chrysler, and a 1964 graduate of Indiana Barbers college in Indianapolis, IN.
He was a barber in New Castle for over 45 years, owning and operating Gary's Barber Shop. For one period of time in Gary's career, he was a part of a 3 generation team of barbers, working with his father, Nelson Smith, and son, Tony Smith. This 3 generation team was one of only 2 in the state of Indiana. His patrons also reached a span of 3 generations.
He was a motorcycle enthusiast his entire life, and was area representative, and chapter representative for Venture Touring Society and representative of Rose City Venture Club. His wife Judy, also shared Gary's love for open road motorcycle touring, and together they visited 48 states and all 4 of the Canadian Provinces on motorcycles. He had been a Boy Scout as a youth, and as an adult served as an Assistant Scout Master.
He was a former member of the New Castle Moose and Eagles Lodges. He was a former member of the 1st Presbyterian Church.
He was very involved in his family's activities, and enjoyed entertaining, cooking, and trying new recipes. He was very interested in staying current on most modern technology especially computers, cameras, televisions and global positioning. He loved sharing his technical knowledge with anyone wishing to learn.
He is survived by his wife, Judith "Judy" Painter Smith whom he married September 5, 1965; one son, Tony Smith of New Castle, IN; two grandchildren, Kelcie Smith and Zach Smith of New Castle; one sister, Linda Johnson (husband, Monty) of New Castle; eight nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday at Macer-Hall Funeral Home.
Services will be 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Macer-Hall Funeral home with the Pastor Sid Martin officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
